The latest update from industry watchdog Ofcom, shows that the UK currently has around 21,371,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections.

The statistics show quite an increase and it includes 639,000 superfast fibre broadband lines showing that fibre optic broadband is becoming very popular very fast.

How accurate are the numbers of home broadband lines?

The figures shown below are usually lower than the figures for the latest results from internet service providers themselves.

For example, BT had more than a million fibre optic based broadband subscribers during 2012.

What about home phone?

Subscribers to home phone services have increased slightly over 2012 but not significantly.

And finally, mobile broadband

The total of mobile broadband subscribers has increased from 4.989m to 5.007m in 2012.

This includes dongles but not smartphones and tablet computers.
