Giant amongst internet providers Virgin Media, has been told elements of its advertising campaigns were ‘misleading’.
It claims to be the fastest broadband provider in the UK whereas actually, there are some faster albeit smaller ISPs out there.
Of course Virgin Media is not the only ISP to use lines such as speed “up to”.
However, it did point the finger at competitors saying that their services were wrongly advertised.
The phrase “the pot calling the kettle black” seems awfully fitting here.
What all the ISPs conveniently fail to include, are all the factors of reaching this speed depend on, for example, the distance between you and the exchange is crucial.
The amount of people using the network and even the type of computer you use has an influence.
In short, it means you can reach that oh-so desired maximum internet speed if you sit on top of the exchange with a new laptop between 2:00 and 2:05AM.
Sure, how to spin things is crucial in advertising and it’s certainly not just in the field of communications that companies polish things up.
It’s like fast-food chains claiming you can lose weight by eating a triple cheeseburger with extra fries four times a day.
If only.
