Rural companies, communities and individuals will be able to apply for government-funded grants of up to £1,000 for broadband access according to the Welsh Assembly. The cash handout applies per property and is subject to applicants receiving quotes from broadband service providers.

£2 million of public money has been earmarked to help people get connected with more funds becoming available if the initiative is deemed successful. Rural communities and businesses often struggle to get online due to their typically long distance from telephone exchanges. Providing access can be very costly in rural areas compared to properties in urban districts who have access to a range of broadband services and prices.

Ministers say the market alone cannot be relied upon to extend broadband access in more isolated rural areas, without support from government. The maximum subsidy could cover up to two years of broadband services from satellite broadband providers.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: “Broadband services are vital to ensure our country can develop the knowledge economy, improving the ability of businesses and individuals to network and innovate. So despite current pressures on our budget we are determined to find ways of opening up access for the relatively few areas in Wales that remain unable to benefit from broadband services.”

Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones said: “This scheme continues our commitment to provide improved services for rural areas and in particular access to the internet which is critical for those living and working across Wales.”
