The newly elected Government are due to hold an open day mid next month to discuss ideas from industry experts about how to provide and fund the broadband rollout to the entire UK – As promised in last year’s Digital Britain report.
The report comprised of two main agendas. One was to provide minimum speeds of 2Mbps to the entire UK by 2012. The other was to put an end to the ‘digital divide’ by rolling out new fibre optic broadband technology in rural areas at the same time they are rolled out in more densely populated city areas.
The newly set up Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) will oversee the discussions in July and assess which ones are worth pursuing.
Something that is also close to the top of the agenda is the cost involved. The BDUK has stressed that all ideas must consider the financial impact, not just the technological impact to the country.
