Sky has just released “serious research” in conjunction with Portsmouth University’s “Centre for the Study of Emotion”.
The research, which is not an April fool, apparently shows that you cry more if you watch a movie in Sky+HD.
The study by Sky+HD and Professor Kim A. Bard from the University of Portsmouth “reveals the science behind why movies have us reaching for the tissues.”
“Professor Bard, a psychologist at the Centre of the Study of Emotion at Portsmouth University, analysed a selection of movies in both high definition and standard definition identifying four key triggers that set our lips quivering and our eyes streaming. These include how often the characters wept (Tear Count), the overall sadness of the movie (Sadness index) and the underlying positive message of the film (Inspirational Index), all moderated by the degree of happiness experienced (Happy Highs).”
“Her study also revealed how, when used in the right combination, these elements can produce an intensive emotional experience and that is intensified even further when movies are watched in high definition.”!
Professor Bard comments, “Watching tearjerkers in high definition is more emotive than standard viewing because with high definition the actions of the face associated with sadness and with teariness are much more clearly evident.”
Whilst we can’t vouch for the research, we can certainly say that watching TV in high definition is a huge improvement over standard definition digital TV. The difference is indeed particularly noticeable with movies, but also with sports and documentaries. Sky SportsHD is quite rightly extremely popular, proven by the fact that over 1 million Sky customers now have the Sky+HD high definition TV package.
