Virgin Media has announced today an ambitious deal with Disney to provide Disney kids’ content across digital TV, online and mobile.  Virgin Media already has the Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney channels, but this deal adds

the recently launched Disney XD channel, as well as Disney TV on demand content including some HD programming.

The TV on demand content includes stuff from all three Disney channels, including  programmes such as Hannah Montana, Phineas and Ferb and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Plus a range of movies, including High School Musical, Camp Rock, and the forthcoming Skyrunners.

Disney XD, is a a new boy-focused, girl-inclusive channel aimed at kids aged 6-14.

The deal also includes rights to a wide range of Disney shows to be made available online and via Virgin Mobile.

Katharine Burns, executive director of content acquisition at Virgin Media said: “Virgin Media has been a pioneer in developing new TV services and our three screens deal with Disney is a perfect example of how driving innovation can benefit the consumer and enhance their viewing experience.  As the home of family entertainment, we’re uniquely positioned to give our customers the greatest range of flexibility and choice in their TV viewing, and with great premium content on demand we think kids and families alike are going to love the freedom this Disney deal will bring.”

The deal is most significant in that it adds depth to Virgin Media’s on demand kids TV content.  It remains to be seen how appealing Disney via your mobile phone is – maybe it will be a huge hit for kids who have “borrowed” their parent’s mobile phones, we’re not sure.
