Virgin Media said today that it is watching the situation as digital TV broadcaster Setanta appears to head closer to administration, following yet another inconclusive board meeting.
Setanta’s situation is so precarious that according to reports on Digital Spy is now not accepting new customers.
It is offered free of charge to Virgin Media customers who take the cable digital TV company’s top-tier XL digital television package. It is also available for £12.99 per month to customers taking other tiers of Virgin Media’s digital cable TV service.
“At this time there is no change to our service,” said a Virgin Media spokesperson. “We’re monitoring the situation with Setanta Sports carefully and will try to ensure our customers continue to receive all available sports coverage.”
Virgin declined to speculate about Setanta any further but noted that in general, it would offer pro-rata refunds to any customer taking a paid-for channel that ceased to broadcast.
As we discussed in our last report on Setanta, we recommend that all Setanta customers hang tight and wait to see what happens next. If the company does enter administration in the next couple of days, which seems likely, the administrators will communicate with customers to explain next steps. The sports rights currently broadcast on Setanta are likely to return to the rights holders and get sold on to other digital TV broadcasters.
